Bible study update

by Struthers Cumbernauld

Tonight we began our study on chapter 11 verse 1 of the book of Hebrews. "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen". Some of the 'things not seen' are spiritual gifts, such as Salvation and Baptism in the Holy Spirit. We briefly discussed 'Spiritual Light' and 'Spiritual Sound' and how our natural senses can become tuned into the spiritual world.
Working through verse 1 backwards, we then looked at 'faith being the substance of things hoped for'. At Salvation, the Holy Spirit draws an individual and faith is borne in them, and they reach out for Christ. The same process is repeated with Baptism in the Holy Spirit and healing. Sometimes the action is swiftly outworked and at other times it is over a longer period.
The Gifts of the Spirit operate in the same way. We must have faith to 'move out' in the gift, however, as the Holy Spirit leads us deeper into God, then we need to exercise more faith, as He leads us step by step.
Faith is proved by works. No matter how many 'good deeds' we perform, we can never earn our Salvation. Our 'fruits' are the result of our faith, not the other way round. Our faith grows when we exercise it, and shrinks when we don't. We need to learn to be sensitive to the anointing and understand when the Gift of Faith is given.
