Thought for the week by Pastor Diana Rutherford

by Struthers Cumbernauld

'He called a little child and had him stand among them.  And he said "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."'  Matt 18:2,3

What are little children like?  As a primary school teacher I can think of lots of words to describe them; interested, curious, teachable, fascinated, loveable, love to show affection and to be loved in return.  Christ goes on to say;

'Therefore whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.'  Matt 18:4

He takes the quality of humility to be one of the greatest we can have.  Not a humility that is a pretence when inside we think we know better; but a humility that makes us become teachable, interested, curious and fascinated in spiritual matters.  Best of all it makes us loved by God and teaches us to love Him in return.

'The greatest in the kingdom of heaven'  is surely our Christ.  The one who said 'for I am gentle and humble in heart.'  Matt 11:29

Let us seek to be like Him and to find true humility in our hearts.
