Thought for the week by pastor Diana Rutherford

'For John truly baptised with water; but ye shall be baptised with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.' Acts 1:5

These are the words of Jesus to His disciples who had been following Him for at least 3 years. They had given up their homes, families and careers to be disciples of this man, yet now He was telling them something completely new!

This was something they didn't understand but they knew something was going to happen in a few days. Furthermore, they knew it was going to be an encounter with the Holy Spirit - part of the Godhead. I wonder how they must have felt? Excited and, perhaps even scared I would expect.

How would we feel if we knew that in a few days we were going to have a mighty encounter with the Holy Spirit that would change us for ever? We read in verse 8:
'But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses.'
What a thought! Not only an encounter with the true Godhead but also power to live and witness for Christ! Is this not the earnest longing of every true Christian?

Then why do so many neglect this part of their Christian experience? Is it because they've known Christ for three years, or perhaps thirty three years and this is something 'new'? Or perhaps they are too scared of the unknown, or perhaps they are afraid it just won't happen for them?

Whatever the reason it is our duty to seek for this experience! We read in verse 4; 'He commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father'. If Christ commanded His disciples, who had known Him so well, how much more should we wait, pray and seek until we receive? Then we too shall have power to witness and to glorify His name!

Take courage my friend, your inheritance is waiting for you. The life changing experience of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit!
