Thought for the week by pastor Diana Rutherford

'Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength.'
Isaiah 41:1

On Saturday night at Struthers Church, our speaker, Alison Speirs, encouraged us throughout 2015 to practise silence.
Silence from music, from the noise and business of life and to find the silence of the soul in solitude. She encouraged us to put away our phones and other technical devices and instead to let our thoughts and concentration be on God. In our technical world of mobile phones and iPads it becomes increasingly difficult to find moments to relax in stillness.
There is something so very attractive about silence; listening to nothing but the natural sounds around you. It gives you an opportunity to absorb something of the stillness of God. I live on the edge of a town and in the stillness of an evening I can often hear sheep bleating in a nearby field or the sound of an owl during the night. Our God has made a beautiful world out there filled with His silence. Not only is there much to see but to hear too.
The Bible tells us there is strength in silence. Take time to gather strength this year in the quietness of His presence.

'In quietness ... shall be your strength.' Isaiah 30:15
