Child Protection Policy
Struthers Memorial Group of Churches has a comprehensive child protection policy. A copy of this policy is available in every branch church. People are welcome to view this policy by application to the minister. Everyone who works with children, young people or vulnerable adults is required to undergo training and to return a completed disclosure form from PVLG.
In Scotland, Mrs Alison Speirs B.A., D.C.E., Dip. SEN, is responsible for all matters of child protection. She can be contacted by email: firstname.lastname@example.org. She would be very pleased to deal with any enquiries.
We have a wide range of activities on offer for young people of various ages in Struthers Church. Please see below for more details.
The Friday Club
Our Friday Club runs each Friday from 7-8.15pm for primary age children at Struthers Church in Cumbernauld. There are a number of activities available on a weekly basis, which we try to vary in order to keep it interesting for the children. The activities usually include various arts and crafts, parachute games, singing, inter-active object lessons, drama activities and discussions.
What we bring on a Friday night is very much based around the stories of the Bible. Our aim is to provide a safe and caring environment for children where they can hear and understand more about Jesus and His love for them. It is a setting where all children are valued and very much a fun place to be!
We welcome the support of parents and carers and have open evenings on a regular basis to give opportunity for you to come and see what is taking place on a Friday night. All our youth leaders have been Disclosure Scotland checked, and we are in the process of updating to the new PVG scheme.
Our student zone runs on a Friday evening from 8.30-9.30p.m. This is geared for high school/student age group. There are lots of fun activities on offer from making imovie trailers, a whole range of inter-active games and food themed nights. Bible studies also feature largely during this part, which are very popular with young people in looking at the relevance of the Bible in today’s society. It is very much a time for discussion with the opportunity for questions.
Our student zone is a place where this age group can come, feel comfortable and be free to be themselves, away from the peer pressure that can weigh so heavily on young people. It is a place where fun and friendship are paramount, but also where our focus remains grounded in the truth of God’s word and where young people can find that word to be relevant in their personal lives.
We have provision for children of all ages during our Sunday morning services:
Our creche runs on a Sunday morning for children aged 0-2 years old. Creche arrangements are not made regularly on a Sunday evening, however, where required a creche will be provided.
Our Sunday school runs for children aged 3- 10 years old. Children take part in activities related to the stories of the Bible. Some recent activities have included making wall displays showing Bible stories, designing and making Old Testament clothing and biscuit decorating. The aim of our Sunday school is to teach children the truths of the Bible, and the importance of displaying these truths in the way we live; caring for one another, forgiving others, putting Jesus first in our lives. It is a very lively, fun and happy environment where children are active and very much encouraged to contribute to discussions and ask questions.
Our Bible class runs for children from P6-S2. It is a time of discussion where we look at what the Bible has to say and talk about it's significance for us. Young people are encouraged to ask questions and to share their own experiences. Our Bible class is very much a stepping stone for young people before they eventually feed into the adult service. It is a very relaxed time where many questions are discussed over hot chocolate, and young people are relaxed and at home in God's presence.
Our Sunday evening provision for children found it’s names from the Adventures of Narnia, where the children in the story set of on an exciting voyage in the ship called the Dawn Treader. Sunday evenings are very much a fun night where primary aged children are catered for. Activities include games, crafts and baking activities. As with all aspects of our youth work, the central focus of our Sunday evening is Jesus. It is a slightly less structured format from that of our Sunday school, but a time where children learn the importance of working as part of a team and can be relaxed in a happy environment where all are valued.
A creche is available when required on a Sunday evening.
Mother and Toddler Group
Our Struthers Church Mother and toddler group has been running successfully for over two years. We gather at 10am and the session lasts for two hours. There is a charge of £2 to cover the cost of snacks and resources (this includes a snack for the adults!)
We welcome mums, dads, grans, grandpas and carers along with your toddlers to our group. We have a variety of activities on offer for children, including bible stories and songs and a variety of suitable play equipment for children to enjoy.
Those who attend our toddlers group find a warm and welcoming environment where children are happy, free and well cared for. Many firm friendships have been formed amongst the adults as well as the children.
