Thought For The Week by Karen

'Even before he made the world, God loved us... God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.  This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.  Ephesians 1:4-5 NLT

One important and often repeated message in the Bible is that when we are born again God becomes our father and we are adopted into His family.  It's one of God's wonderful blessings to His people.  We are not just a people that God helps.  It is amazing that God forgives us, cleanses us from our sin and makes us right with Him.  But He goes so much further than that: He adopts us into His family.

Adoption speaks of a close relationship.  In adopting you, God has actually chosen you as His son or daughter despite your history, your mistakes, your sins and your flaws.  God not only planned to adopt us but took great pleasure in it.  This shows us that God wants to draw near to us and to have a loving, close relationship with us.

When a child is adopted the legal ties to their biological parents are cut and they instead receive legal ties to their adoptive parents.  So an adopted child has exactly the same rights and privileges as a natural born child.  In the same way when we become a child of God it means:

  • We have the assurance that God will correct us and guide us in the right way ( Heb 12:6).
  • We receive the privilege of being His sons and daughters for all eternity.
  • We receive an amazing unmatched inheritance.
  • We are deeply loved by God (1 John 3:1)
  • We become heirs in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:17).

It's amazing to think that because of God's amazing grace we have a new relationship with Him and are no longer 'children of wrath' ( Eph 2:3) but children of God.
