Thought for the Week by Pastor Diana Rutherford

Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.  Mark 6:31

We all view Christmas and New Year in different ways.  I think, for busy parents they are often relieved when it's all over and life returns to normal.  There is often much coming and going and the normal household routine is totally lost during this time.

The disciples didn't have much of a normal routine either.  As soon as word spread around that this Man could teach, heal and cast out demons the crowds gathered from all over to see the miracles.  In the gospels it tells us that on one occasion Jesus had to sit in a ship to preach to the crowds.

This story tells us that there were so many people coming and going the disciples didn't even get time to eat!  What wonderful words of Christ 'Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place and rest a while.'

There are times when He says the same things to us too.  Come apart and rest.  Come apart from all your duties, from all the demands of life and just rest.  Let His peace enter into your soul.  Learn to find rest within your spirit; rest that settles into the very deepest part of your innermost being; rest that brings a tranquillity within.

If we learn to do this from time to time, we shall be much stronger Christians.  We will also discover that when difficulties meet us along life's way we shall cope better because we are stronger.

As we enter 2014 let it be one of our New Year Resolutions to find this place apart and rest a while in Him.
