Thought for the week by pastor Diana Rutherford

'For in my inner being I delight in God's law.' Romans 7:22

In Romans chapter 7, Paul speaks of the conflict that there is between knowing what is right but doing what is wrong. It's a difficult chapter to follow but a principle we all understand.

Since we were children, we knew the difference between right and wrong, but so often we chose to do the wrong thing because it was more appealing. Paul speaks earlier in this chapter of 'sin, seizing the opportunity' (v8;11) and that is exactly how it feels when we sin. It's as if wrong has seized hold of something within us and although in our mind we know we ought not to be doing, yet we continue. In severe cases sometimes this leads to the start of an addiction while in others people become twisted because they have given way to deceitfulness, bitterness and spite. Sin has indeed seized the opportunity within us!

We thank God that in the same chapter we read that Paul delights in God's law. It is encouraging that the greatest of apostles could feel like this! Sometimes he delighted in God's law and other times he fought with it. We know that Paul loved God; a man who suffered so much and was finally martyred for his faith. What greater love is there than this?

And so dear friend, when you feel the conflict of your own heart against the law of God hold fast! Delight yourself as much as you can in His law, and when sin attempts to seize hold of you remember Paul felt the same. There will be times when you will fall but remember even the greatest saints of old fell...but they always got back up, fought the good fight and continued till the very end.

So press on. Never allowing discouragement to overwhelm you, but instead let a holy determination keep you and hold you all your days.
